Brisbane small businesses told to rethink tax, cash flow and compliance before EOFY

Evergreen Accounting, a leading provider of accounting services for small businesses, today urged Brisbane business owners to reassess their approaches to tax planning, cash flow management and compliance as the end of the financial year (EOFY) approaches. The company highlighted that Brisbane’s competitive business environment demands a more strategic and proactive approach, as recent tax changes and ongoing regulatory pressure raise the stakes for small business operators.

“There is a growing gap between businesses that have good financial visibility and businesses that are still operating month to month without reliable numbers,” said Natasha Mackenzie, Managing Director, Evergreen Accounting. “In Brisbane’s competitive small business market, that gap matters. It affects cash flow, staffing, tax planning, debt management and the ability to invest with confidence.”

Evergreen Accounting has identified a rising risk for Brisbane-based companies that continue to use outdated bookkeeping and delayed reporting, warning that these practices leave businesses exposed in an increasingly strict Australian Tax Office (ATO) environment. Furthermore, many owners remain unaware of how legislative reforms—such as the non-deductibility of ATO interest charges incurred from July 1, 2025 – can impact their commercial viability. Evergreen Accounting emphasized that the cost of unresolved tax debt will now weigh more heavily on the bottom line, prompting businesses to take action before year-end pressures mount.

“The cost of falling behind is now higher. What may have once been treated as something to sort out later is now much more expensive,” said Mackenzie. “That should be a wake-up call for business owners carrying unresolved tax debt.”

According to Mackenzie, business owners should use the months ahead of June 30 to thoroughly review their financial health. She advised, “Owners should focus not just on maximizing deductions but on ensuring that their numbers are current, their payroll is accurate and their superannuation obligations are met. Too often, decisions are made based on guesswork when reliable data should be the foundation.”

Mackenzie also pointed out that many Brisbane companies are growing steadily but have not yet implemented the financial discipline essential for guiding their next phase. “That middle ground is where mistakes happen. As founders hire more staff, take on higher costs and make bigger commitments, accounting practices need to keep pace with business growth,” she said.

To help clients bridge this gap, Evergreen Accounting promotes year-round engagement rather than reactive problem-solving at year-end. “Accountants should not just be historians. They should help business owners make better decisions before problems appear,” said Mackenzie. “With reliable financial data, business owners have the clarity they need to invest, manage debt and plan tax strategies confidently.”
