Generational Farm Businesses Struggling to Keep Up as Tax and Super Obligations Grow More Complex

Evergreen Accounting, a specialist provider of accounting and bookkeeping services for the agricultural sector, today announced that an increasing number of generational farm businesses are struggling to meet growing tax and superannuation obligations following recent regulatory changes and ongoing operational pressures. As regulatory requirements become more complex for primary producers, Evergreen Accounting is witnessing a significant shift towards outsourced bookkeeping to enable timely, strategic decision-making while alleviating administrative burdens.

“Farmers run their properties better than anyone, but when it comes to getting their bookkeeping done, they often do not prioritise it because the work in front of them always feels more urgent,” said Natasha Mackenzie, Managing Director, Evergreen Accounting. “The problem is that when bookkeeping falls behind, everything else becomes harder. BAS, payroll, cash flow, tax planning, lender reporting and decision-making all start relying on guesswork instead of current numbers.”

Mackenzie noted that family-run farm businesses, in particular, face an array of challenges due to their structure and the continual need to navigate rules such as income averaging and farm management deposits, as well as new tax and superannuation changes effective from July 2025. This complexity is compounded by the Australian Taxation Office’s recent clarification that interest incurred on tax liabilities is no longer deductible, increasing the cost of unresolved tax debt management for agricultural enterprises. Many farms operate through layered business structures with unique ownership arrangements, further exacerbating the need for robust and connected financial systems.

“Good outsourced bookkeeping gives farmers more than reconciliations and data entry,” said Mackenzie. “It creates a clearer bridge between day-to-day transactions and the bigger financial picture. In many cases, that means business owners are effectively gaining a more strategic layer of oversight as well, one that helps close the gap between bookkeeping and accounting.”

The disconnect between operational urgency and record-keeping can translate into second guessing and missed opportunities, particularly where several parties—including accountants, banks and family decision-makers—require accurate and up-to-date data. Mackenzie said, “A lot of farmers are getting bits of information from different places. They may speak to their accountant at one point, their bank at another and whoever is doing the books at another.” She added, “When those conversations are not connected, there is second guessing. The numbers may technically exist, but they are not being translated into practical business decisions.”

Mackenzie also highlighted that succession planning, family trusts and asset protection strategies increase the importance of up-to-date records and ongoing communication. “We know farming is a business, but it is often a family business as well, and that adds another layer of complexity,” said Mackenzie. “There are different structures, different ownership arrangements, different family dynamics and different goals. No two farms are alike, which is why it is risky when bookkeeping is treated as a back-office task instead of part of the wider financial structure.”

Given the volatility of weather, markets and labour, proactive bookkeeping is emerging as a vital management tool for primary producers, rather than an administrative afterthought. “Succession planning can be turned upside down by divorce, poorly documented arrangements or trust structures that were never properly set up for the future,” said Mackenzie. “That is when you need up-to-date accounting advice, clean books and clear communication between everyone involved. If the records are wrong or late, it becomes much harder to make good decisions at the right time.”

“Farms already deal with enough volatility from weather, supply, labour and markets,” said Mackenzie, underscoring the point that avoidable financial stress related to bookkeeping must not add to these challenges. “The last thing they need is avoidable financial pressure caused by books that are months behind or tax positions that have not been reviewed early enough.” With the compliance burden growing for those who employ staff, including seasonal and expanding workforces, farm owners must now meet expectations for system accuracy and current payroll processes. “The compliance side of running a farm business is not getting lighter,” said Mackenzie. “If you have employees, seasonal workers or expanding operations, the expectation is that your systems are accurate and current. That starts with bookkeeping.”

Evergreen Accounting’s approach ensures that farm owners benefit from seamless information flow between farm office, accountant and decision-makers, reducing the risk of miscommunication and enhancing confidence across operations. “The best bookkeeping relationship is one that helps a farmer sleep better at night,” said Mackenzie. “They know the numbers are up to date, they know their accountant is getting the right information and they are not wasting time trying to piece together where the business stands.” For Mackenzie, this clarity and connectivity are what allow farm businesses to operate efficiently and adapt to new challenges.

“Farmers should be focused on the farm, not chasing paperwork at the end of every quarter,” said Mackenzie. “When bookkeeping is handled properly, it becomes a real management tool. It gives clarity, improves communication and helps business owners make stronger calls across the year, not just at tax time.”
