Small businesses need strategy, not just compliance, as confidence weakens

Evergreen Accounting, a boutique accounting, bookkeeping and advisory firm focused on personalised financial support, is urging small to medium-sized businesses across Australia to transform their approach to accounting as business confidence declines. In the midst of ongoing economic uncertainty and recession speculation, company leaders are being advised to engage in more strategic and frequent discussions with their accountants, rather than relying solely on end-of-year compliance processes.

Natasha Mackenzie, Managing Director of Evergreen Accounting, said the time for reactive finance management is over. “In a market like this, business owners cannot afford to only speak to their accountant when tax returns are due. When confidence is soft, margins are tighter and every decision matters more, the right accountant should be helping business owners think clearly about cash flow, structure, tax exposure, debt, pricing and where the pressure points are likely to show up next,” said Mackenzie, Evergreen Accounting.

The latest NAB Q1 2026 Quarterly Business Survey underscores the urgency, revealing that business confidence has dropped to its lowest point in 15 months. At the same time, CPA Australia reports that fewer than half of small Australian businesses experienced growth in 2025, with many more expecting a contracting economy. Against this backdrop, Evergreen Accounting highlights how business owners are often striving to stay lean and manage cash flow but are not initiating the right financial conversations early enough to avoid critical missteps.

“Too many businesses are still making important decisions without current figures. They are hiring, investing, discounting, carrying debt or cutting costs without enough financial clarity. That is where mistakes happen. When conditions are uncertain, you need better information and stronger advice, not less of it,” said Mackenzie. “We find that survival mode, if it continues without analysis, can be dangerous. Yes, you need to protect cash flow and maintain discipline but you must also know what the numbers reveal about your clients, margins and expenses,” Mackenzie added.

Evergreen Accounting emphasises that accountants should support clients through enhanced cash flow forecasting, tax planning, reviewing pricing models and contingency scenario planning. Regular, realistic financial discussions are vital, especially as delayed reporting and incomplete information can leave businesses exposed to risk. “An accountant should not just tell you what happened last quarter. They should help you think through what happens if sales soften or if costs rise again. Good advice gives business owners confidence to act earlier,” said Mackenzie.

Business owners are encouraged not to postpone meaningful dialogue. “Business owners do not need alarmism but they do need realism. They need someone in their corner who can help them interpret the numbers properly, identify risks early and make better commercial decisions. In uncertain times, that relationship becomes even more valuable,” said Mackenzie. “Strong small businesses stay close to their numbers and respond before problems escalate. When the economy feels unpredictable, the answer is not to avoid the conversation. It is to have better conversations, earlier, with the right accountant,” Mackenzie concluded.
